This relies on two different things. Unfortunately either or both of these are likely to be changed in the big craft patch. I think this has been delayed to after Christmas, so you have another week.

1) Alchemists are easy, fairly fast, and cheap to macro.
2) High NPC buy-back rates on some products

I'm doing this at tier 4 (level 30+) . It works to a lesser extent at lower levels but isn't as profitable.

What you need to do is stock up on some tier 4 harvestables. These are not used in many other recipies and not in high demand so you can get them fairly cheap. I rarely pay over 1sp for them but will happily go up to 2 or 3.

The harvestables are things like:

Sage
Red Oak
Black Oak
Sneezeweed
Tarragon
Cypress
Sumach

Maybe a couple of others.

Each of these can be turned into a number of reagants used as ingredients in poison and potion recipes. But most importantly, once combines with water (6cp) and furel (6cp) they can be sold back to an NPC merchant for 8sp a pop or 1.6gp a stack.

For maximum money:

Don't worry about trying to get pristine. Crude is more than enough. You should usually get it to crude in 2 ticks. So each unit (and the 6+ sp profit) takes about 20 seconds. You can knock up a full stack for over a gold profit in 10-15 minutes easy.

For maximum XP:

Make sure you go for pristine and cycle through every reagent that each harvestable can do. this way you get the first crafted XP bonus for all items.
