Priests Mastering The Isle Of Refuge (Everquest 2 Parser)
December 13th, 2006When you first hop off the tutorial boat and land ashore, the initial NPC chap you'll come across is Garven Tralk. He'll be whining for refugees to come see him. Ignore his grating demeanor and strike up a conversation with the fellow. He'll ask you your profession etc, and of course since you wish to be a priest……select priest!
General Quest:
Garven will ask you to “prove your worth” by killing one of the invading Goblins, which have suddenly plagued the Island of Refuge. Accept this quest without delay, and double click the weapons rack to grab a simple club and a few other items. Equip the club and bring up your map by clicking the "M" key. The troupe of Goblins you'll need to target to complete this first quest is a foolish bunch, mindlessly sprinting towards their deaths at the hands of the powerful guards manning the west entrance of town……where the action is! Head into town and then to the NW, heading out of the main western gate.
Run around, or jump over the wooden barricades and get a goblin in your sites, either by directly clicking on one, or by pressing tab until you have a suitable target in place. Once you have a target, use your Smite spell (this spell is bound to the 6 key on your keyboard by default). Smite will blast your target from a great distance, so blast away until the Goblin drops. Once you've killed the Goblin, traverse your way back to Garven at the docks.
Garven Tralk awards you with your first free bit of armor “Acolyte Gloves” for dropping your first Goblin. Throw those bad boys on your digits and head into town to visit Nathinia Sparklebright.
Nathinia is your main point of contact on the island for all Priestly quests. She hangs out just south of the Bank in town (financial bank, not bank as in shore). Bring up your local map by pressing "M", and head up towards the Bank. Once you find Nathinia double click on her to engage her in a friendly chat, ignore her pointless spouting off at the mouth, and get her to offer you a quest.
Quest 1: War Statues
Nathinia's first quest involves the destruction of 3 Goblin war statues. Bring up your map by pressing the "M" key on your keyboard. Just northwest of town you'll see a deer icon. Just east of this location you'll find the war statues Nathinia directed you to destroy.
The statues themselves look like small black boxes, and are hard to see at first. Just use tab to bounce around the nearest enemies when you arrive in the area. Immediately use your "Smite" spell on a statue, and move on to the next statue IMMEDIATELY. Don't waste any time here. As soon as you hit the statue, they are considered destroyed, despite what their energy bar says. Immediately target the next one and hit it with smite, and repeat for the third statue. Keep in mind the Mystics in the area will begin to aggro you as soon as you begin destroying their beloved statues, but that's fine. Just take out all 3 statues quickly, and use your sprint skill to high-tail it back to town. Don’t fight the Mystics! There is no reason to do so, and you will likely get killed if you decide to throw down with these putrid fellows.
Once you reach town with the mystics on your tail, let the town guards take them out. Merely keep running in circles around the wooden barricades until the NPC guards have dispatched the nasty mystics and head back to Nathinia.
Let Nathinia know you've destroyed the Mystics' pathetically carved "statues" (after all they are just boxes) and she'll reward you with a pair of Acolyte Boots. One small hitch here, the boots have been deposited for safekeeping at the Bank for you, so you'll need to go withdraw them yourself.
Directly north of Nathinia you'll find Banker Vertbridge, you can't miss him he is standing right beside the roaring fire at the wooden building beside Nathinia. Double click him and the banking window will pop up where you'll be able to retrieve your brand new pair of kicks.
After you have your new boots equipped, head back to Nathinia and strike up another conversation for your next quest.
Quest 2: Get some Spider Venom!
Nathinia is an odd woman. Apparently during her days of standing in front of the bank doing nothing more than yapping with Refugees, she is hard at work concocting potions which require vile ingredients such as Giant Spider Venom. Being the lucky Priest you have become, you’ll be retrieving no less than 5 sacks of said venom for the odd woman.
So….this quest is relatively simple, kill spiders until you have 5 sacks of venom. Easy deal! Now where to find the spiders?
The "Giant" spiders are located just NW of the War Statues you destroyed in the previous quest. The Giant Spider are pretty strong opponents for this level. With your non-existent gear, you'll need to kite these filthy arachnids to the best of your ability. Figure out your maximum range for the smite spell by practicing on some Gruttooth invaders or deer in the area. Once you figure out your maximum casting distance, and are back at full health smite a spider from the maximum distance and immediately begin backpedaling. You can cast Smite every 3 seconds after completing a single spell, so backpedal rapidly for 3 seconds and fire off another smite. Completely avoiding damage using this technique isn’t possible, but head to head a spider would drop you relatively quickly.
The goal here is to minimize damage by using this technique. Learn this approach well, as it is the most intelligent way for ranged characters in EQ2 to level in the early portions of the game.
Once you've collected 5 sacks of Spider Venom, head back to Nathinia to collect your next award………Acolyte Leggings! Throw those bad boys on and strike up another conversation with Nathinia for your next quest.
Quest 3: Take out some Brutes!
For this next, and final "solo" profession specific quest on the Island of Refuge, you'll be heading to an area you are not yet familiar with……that is if you have only followed this tutorial. Bring up your map, and take a look at the NW corner of the island. You'll see a cluster of 4 "Goblin Camps" (NOTE: if you can't roll over the camps and see a text label, click the "hide the fog" option in the map window.), around the entrance of the very first camp you'll encounter your first "aggressive" creatures, Gruttooth Brutes.
The Gruttooth Brutes will attack you without provocation, unless you consider blessing them with a view of your priestly aura as provocation. In other words, they'll attack you for no reason whatsoever…..so be careful. Scout the area and attempt to find a Brute out in the open, with no other Brutes around him. Once you've located your first target, and are certain you can engage him in a 1v1 battle, pedal back to your maximum cast distance and use the same kiting technique you used against the spiders in the previous quest.
These guys are TOUGH, you don't want to stand toe to toe with them…..that being said you'll still take some decent damage in these brawls. So if needed, use the "sit" function between battles a safe distance away from the Brutes, or if you’ve hit level 5 use your “Minor Arch Healing” spell to replenish health back into your Priestly body. So, the way this goes is…… take out a Brute…heal up…and head back to battle. Only one caveat here, sitting may be preferable as you don’t have oodles of mana at this stage. You also don’t have a ton of health, so sitting will replenish you health rather quickly.
You'll need to collect 4 "Totems" from the Brutes for Nathinia to complete this portion of the quest. Not every Brute will drop a totem, so theoretically you may need to kill 8 or more Brutes to collect the necessary amount of items.
Also, if you do happen to attract more than one Brute at a time, hit that sprint key and head south as quickly as possible. Eventually, the Brutes will give up the chase and you can re-approach the area and begin the process anew, attempting to draw out a single Brute for solo combat.
Once you've collected the 4 totems, head back to town and present them to Nathinia for your next reward……..an Acolyte Tunic! At this point, the in game host will notify you you are now ready to leave the island if you so wish. However, Nathinia still offers you yet another quest. This quest requires taking out a "Lead Orc" who is responsible for rallying all the Goblins on the Island. This specific quest requires teaming up with other players on the island, and aims to get you used to partying with other players.
This quest is a bit beyond the scope of this Priest tutorial, as this quest is available for all races/classes. Rest assured, you have collected the necessary equipment to continue leveling on the Isle of Refuge until Level 6, Level 7. Continue exploring the Island and speak to all the various NPCs in town and North of the Goblin encampments. Many of them will provide you with other simple tasks which can result in gobs of free equipment…..jewelry, new weapons and more!
Good luck mighty Priest! You now have the skills and goods necessary to set out into the greater realm of EQ2.
