Rogue Soloing Techniques (Buy EQ2 Plat)

December 21st, 2006

I've been soloing reliably since level 1. Most recently, at level 29, I was soloing level 32 (yellow) turtles without too much of a problem. At level 30, with my new poisons, I own them.

Here's the keys I've found:

EQUIPMENT - This is perhaps the most important. Make sure every piece of your equipment is the best you can afford. I try not to wear anything less than white… yellow if I can help it. Concentrate more on AC and agility boosts. We don't have many hit points, so the less we get hit… the better. Never fight with a weapon that is less than white, it limits your damage.

SKILLS - Make sure your skills are upgraded as much as possible. The difference between App1 and Adept1 can mean the difference in dropping the mob and running.

POISON - If you're not using poison, you're going to reduce your effective soloing ability. Buy your level appropriate poison from a player or the poison shop (SQ) and USE it. It will add greatly to your damage.

STRATEGY - Make sure you fight like a rogue, not a tank. Use your stuns and flank attacks, start off with your best opening move while stealthed. Use HOs! I normally start off with backstab, then stun, go stealth and stealth attack, then HO, then regular attacks, then HO again, repeat until stun is back up, then stun/flank….rinse and repeat. Find what works and do it. There is a good recommended technique for kiting a mob using your bow, learn it, master it and use it before it gets nerfed.

SMART - Choose your opponents wisely. In general, animals are easy to kill that humanoids. Choose solo animals if you are having problems with humanoids. If you fight humanoids, remember the knockdown skills (Bludgeon, etc.) to keep them on their back and not attacking you.

FOOD - Make sure you are using the best food you can afford. Better food equals faster health/mana regen which reduces downtime, and if you have to run and use HELP, then you start regenning faster in case you need sprint more.

BUFF - Don't start a combat without buffing yourself. I usually throw on the generic AGL/STR bugg (Street Smarts, etc.) and then Fancy Footwork RIGHT before the fight. Don't use Buffs that lower your AC unless you are in a group (Risky Advance, etc.). Lower AC equals more damage and more damage is BAD.

POTIONS - There are several potions that will dispel effects on you (like Pumice Stones from EQ). Nice to have a few in case you are tackling casters.

RUN - There is no shame in running. Better to run than get debt. If you hit red and the MoB isn't at a sliver of health… RUN. Remember, the rogue that runs away, lives to stab the opponent in the back another day. As the saying goes, Better to loose your pride than loose your life. If you need to use ESCAPE or one of the many runaway exploits.
